RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE DIFFICULT!  We usually begin our relationships with hope, optimism, and excitement. Yet in many instances, the positive gives way to conflict, misunderstanding, eroded trust, or worse. Our relationship services include couple counseling and communication workshops.  Both are designed to help you improve communication, kindle romance, experience greater intimacy, and re-experience passion.

Couples Counseling

In a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere, we work with you to explore the dynamics of your relationship, recognize the patterns that are not working, and help you replace the old, ineffective patterns with new, effective ones. We specialize in working with couples who have experienced infidelity.

Typical issues presented by couples include:  communication issues; stuck, repetitive arguments/conflicts; hurtful, intense fights; parenting conflicts; step- blended family issues; infidelity; and decreased passion and intimacy.

We work with relationships at three levels:

1. "Emergency Room/Critical Care."  Some relationships are experiencing damaging dynamics, including physical, verbal, and/or emotional violence or abuse.  If this is happening, our first priority is to stop this damaging dynamic and create safety for both partners. 
 
2. Knowledge and Skills.  Most of us did not grow up with good models or educational opportunities about how to navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of relationships. We teach you new information and new skills for communicating at difficult times and for avoiding the old, repetitive traps that have characterized your relationship.

3. "Junk In the Trunk."  This term, borrowed with permission from a client years ago, refers to unfinished emotional business from the past that we bring with us into relationships.  We help you become aware of when current issues actually represent unfinished business from the past disguised as a "now" issue. We then help you get complete with this business, so it no longer affects your relationship.

Both Joan and Gerald provide couple counseling, so your choice of counselors will depend on schedules, preferences, and sometimes insurance coverage.
